For the last Hot Topics program of 2023, we've chosen one of the most newsworthy topics of the year--artificial intelligence--that has far reaching consequences. The innate danger and potential good that encompasses this new technology has even motivated President Biden to issue a  landmark executive order targeting artificial intelligence.  We'll be focusing on AI and Elections: The Good, the Bad, the Reality

"The Executive Order establishes new standards for AI safety and security, protects Americans’ privacy, advances equity and civil rights, stands up for consumers and workers, promotes innovation and competition, advances American leadership around the world, and more."  Read the full Fact Sheet HERE

Join Julie Anderson, Editor-in-Chief of the Orlando Sentinel and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Bill Cowles, Supervisor of Orange County Elections for 27 years, and Kevin Aslett, an Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida who specializes in online misinformation, as they discuss the use of artificial intelligence to confuse voters and undermine democracy.  Moderating is Spectrum News 13 Anchor, Ybeth Bruzual.

The panel will delve into previous attempts to spread false information via altered photos, videos, and other means, as well as how this technology may be employed in future elections. Most importantly, the panel will suggest actionable steps that voters can take to safeguard themselves.  Learn more HERE.

Although recorded last October, the topic is still very relevant.

In 2021, President Biden declared November as "Native American Heritage Month," recognizing the brutal treatment of these indigenous people and emphasizing Native American roots are “deeply embedded in this land- a homeland loved, nurtured, strengthened and fought for with honor and conviction."

The DEIA Committee invites all LWVOC members to consider reading a title from the lists below sometime this month to learn, recognize and honor the history of the original settlers of our nation:
