Subject: LWVOC Newsletter & Events for Members
From: Lisa K Adkins

Volunteerism is the heart of being a Leaguer.  There are many ways to serve such as registering voters, committee work, or at an event such as this inspiring opportunity last week.  The Vietnam Veterans Administration held their national convention in Orlando August 8-12. Nationally, local LWV organizations help conduct the election process at the VVA's request during their national conference held every 2 years. This year, 30 LWVOC volunteers came together to hand out ballots, ensure the proper ballots were collected based on the organization's 9 regions across the country and then counted the ballots. The event took many hours of planning and meticulous prep work under the direction of Nancy Nix, with Kathy Sheerin and Gina Hall assisting Nancy leading up to the event.  The overwhelming comments from the Volunteers was that it was a lot of fun, great teamwork, very well organized and wonderful to serve the VVA organization.

HELP NEEDED
TAKE THE QUIZ FOR VOTER REGISTRATION!
Just a reminder that all members that wish to participate in voter registration events must take and score 100% on the new voter registration quiz. The quiz can be found on the Voter Services Committee page Voter Services Committee page HERE. The new quiz went into effect 6/28/2023 and is in effect until 6/30/2025. What is the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact?
No one wants the Loser to win and that is entirely possible with the Electoral College.
In 2006, the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact was introduced. It’s an elegant solution to ensure that the candidate with the most votes in all 50 states wins the presidency.  Learn how this works without a constitutional amendment.
Register to learn more HERE and join us September 6 from 1-2 PM.

Statewide call to action: The League of Women Voters supports the Florida Right to Clean Water campaign, a citizens' initiative to amend the Florida Constitution with the right to clean and healthy waters. If our current laws were working, then we wouldn’t have manatees dying in record numbers, 80% of our 1000 springs impaired, and harmful blue-green algae and red tide in greater frequency and duration. A constitutional right takes precedence over legislation that permits pollution, restricts fertilizer bans, and allows radioactive materials to be used in our roads. Create a legacy for the future of our waters

The Right to Clean Water! In support of establishing our basic right to clean and healthy water, LWVOC has committed to helping get the citizen initiative on the 2024 ballot.
