It's National Volunteer Week!  For all of you, our members and supporters, THANK YOU for helping us on our journey to empower voters and defend democracy.  Tonight, we will meet our new Board of Directors, celebrate our League Leaders, and share our 2023-24 program.  We salute our outgoing Board, especially Co-Presidents Barbara Lanning and Nicolette Springer whose guidance in this post pandemic era has been invaluable. Next month, we host a journalist panel discussion of the wide-ranging effects of recently passed laws in the 2023 Florida Legislative session.  The laws include a six-week abortion ban, new rules making it harder for policyholders to sue insurance companies, a permitless concealed weapons law, private school vouchers for all K-12 students, etc.
Visit the Hot Topics page for full details.

What's Happening?
Orange County
Mayor Jerry Demings launched the 2023 Community Crime Survey to receive feedback from residents on preventing and reducing gun violence and violent crime.  The Community Crime Survey is available in English, Spanish, and Creole at www.ocfl.net/crimesurvey and will run through May 12, 2023

Florida
An unfortunate surprise, Florida leads the nation with the most lead pipes and will receive $376M for drinking water infrastructure.
Read more HERE.  And speaking of pipes, neighboring LWV of Seminole County is hosting a May 6 seminar on pipe-safe products.
LEAGUE MEMBERS, the national League of Women Voters needs your attention.  Perhaps you've seen their email requesting a response to their national survey?  Respond as soon as possible!

The survey will only be open for one more week!

Visit LWV.org/FramingTheFuture or directly to the survey before it closes on April 22.

LWVFL has endorsed the Right to Clean Water! In support of establishing our basic right to clean and healthy water, our League has committed to helping get this citizen initiative on the 2024 ballot. The goal is to collect 90,000 signed petitions in Orange County.
Please visit our Volunteer Page and make a plan to spend some time outside this weekend or later this month collecting signatures. Petitions, clipboards & literature will be provided for this popular cause at event sites.
