The League of Women Voters of Orange County has a history of more than 80 years in this community as an activist, grassroots organization whose members believe citizens should play a critical role in advocacy.  We do not endorse or oppose political candidates or parties at any level of government.  Our advocacy positions are based on the merits of each issue, after careful study and consensus.

Hot Topics Luncheon Programs Are Back!
Voters are confused and asking questions like these…
• Is our voter registration still valid?
• Who needs to re-apply for a by-mail ballot to vote this year?
• Can Florida’s map turn the US Congress from blue to red?

We aren’t so sure about the answers either. So, after a two-year hiatus we are kicking off our first Hot Topics luncheon program on May 11 with a timely program to clear up election law and redistricting confusion. Get the latest facts from the experts while having a delicious lunch in the magnificent and new Winter Park Events Center. Click HERE for more information and to register.

LWVOC member and former LWVFL President Patricia Brigham, has started a new non-profit Prevent Gun Violence Florida in the belief that more coverage of dangerous behavior is critical to stemming the tide of gun violence.  As an example, Patti shares the recent story in Jacksonville of elementary students given the opportunity to hold military style weapons at a "Touch-the-Truck" event.

“It is really disturbing that it is a sheriff’s office who is allowing children to touch these types of weapons,” Patricia Brigham, President of Prevent Gun Violence Florida said.  Brigham, who lives in Orlando, feels the event wasn’t teaching children about gun safety and says what is really needed is a campaign reminding adults to keep guns locked and unloaded."

MEMBERS ONLY This week's webinar will feature two special guests in honor of April being National Minority Health Month. This nationally recognized month is significant as experiences with racism and discrimination can contribute to mistrust of our health care system among racial and ethnic minority groups, leading to mistrust of factual information.

Our featured guests will both address different aspects of minority health disparities in Florida. Join us on Friday, April 22 at 1:00 p.m. (ET) as we welcome Dr. Jeffery Goldhagen, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Florida as well as Paula Mimms.
