The League of Women Voters of Orange County has a history of more than 80 years in this community as an activist, grassroots organization whose members believe citizens should play a critical role in advocacy.  We do not endorse or oppose political candidates or parties at any level of government.  Our advocacy positions are based on the merits of each issue, after careful study and consensus.

The LWVOC had a strong presence at the recent Mayor's Summit this past Saturday by featuring an informative table display as well as a seminar, "How to be an Informed Voter."  Presenters included above top: Samuel Delgado, Gail Fumanack, Kathy Sheerin, and Co-Presidents Sue Gilman and Barbara Lanning.  Also, above left, Mayor Dyer speaking and above right, Leaguer Carol Wonsavage and Mayor Buddy Dyer.  Former Co-President Sandi Vidal's organization Central Florida Foundation was awarded the "Community Builder Award."   *Photos courtesy Carol Wonsavage.

Hot Topics Is Back!

You have pleaded to restore our in-person Hot Topics luncheon programs. It’s happening beginning May 11 and we have a bonus! Not only is the new Winter Park Events Center our new Hot Topics home, but our state LWVFL President Cecile Scoon will be on the panel for our first program of the season, Voter Confusion Continues: New Election Laws & Redistricting. She is just the right person at just the right time to join our Supervisor of Elections Bill Cowles to talk about this topic. Pres. Scoon led the lawsuit against SB 90 that has just been rightfully judged in federal court as unconstitutional because it restricts and suppresses the vote of all Floridians, especially Black, Hispanic, and disabled voters. As the first Black President of LWVFL and an attorney, she will bring her first-hand perspective and knowledge to clear up confusion about 2021 SB 90, 2022 SB 524, and redistricting as we prepare to launch our local voter registration and turnout campaign. SOE Cowles will round out the program as talking about logistics and administrative issues that will impact Central Florida voters. Welcome back to Hot Topics!

This week's webinar will feature a discussion and analysis of our recent court   win regarding Florida's Senate Bill 90 (2021) and what this ruling means moving forward with Fritz Wermuth, one of the League's lead attorneys on this case.

Discussion: What is the summation of this ruling? What does it mean for voters? What does it mean for the League? Will it be appealed?

Orange County Mayor Launches Transportation Initiative Online and In Person

Resident Survey and Open Houses Will Gather Community Feedback on Transportation Needs

- April 26 is the date that the Board of County Commissioners will vote whether or not to put the penny sales tax for transportation on the ballot.  The League is urging Commissioners to vote "yes" and put the sales tax on the ballot.

For MEMBERS ONLY~The LWVFL would appreciate your time for this short survey.

The purpose of this survey is to get a baseline assessment of LWVFL membership. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is an overarching guiding principle for LWVFL and assessing a baseline will help gauge improvement in the future. Results of this survey will also teach us insights about how we can improve the League experience. This survey will take no longer than five minutes. Individual responses will not be shared. Thank you in advance for your participation. Please fill out by FRIDAY 4/8/22

ECHOES from the past....  You may have seen this morning's email from the national LWV and on their header, they used a past LWVOC photo.
It's special because it shows two beloved former Co-Presidents, Carol Davis (who has sadly passed) and Ann Hellmuth as well as a "mystery" Leaguer because this editor doesn't know who she is!  Yes, will happily identify her next week after I hear from some of our longtime members.
