Ready for the next summer blockbuster? At the AUG 12 Hot Topics, we'll be covering the "odyssey" of the proposed property tax amendment. Florida voters will consider a constitutional amendment on Nov. 3 that would significantly increase the homestead exemption for homeowners. If approved by at least 60 percent of voters, the amendment would offer substantial tax reductions for some homeowners, but it also would create significant budget challenges for local governments. *In addition, the Immigration Committee will be taking donations in support of TUB (The Umbrella Brigade), see more details when you  Register HERE for Hot Topics.

The moderator is Steve Mort, host of the “Talking Central Florida” podcast at Central Florida Public Media. The panelists are Sadaf Knight, CEO of Florida Policy Institute; Amy Mercado, Orange County Property Tax Appraiser, and Jason Garcia, investigative reporter, newsletter author and podcaster.

Across the country, the right to vote is being reshaped in real time. Protections are being stripped away. New barriers are taking hold. And too often, what people are experiencing is never fully captured. The Voices for Voting Rights series of community forums exists to break that cycle by lifting the voices of those being targeted, putting what’s happening on the record, and engaging communities in the solutions. AUG 6, Thursday, 6-8PM, Callahan Neighborhood Center  Volunteer at the event HERE

The Immigration Committee tabled at the LULAC Conference on Sat. 7/25. Winnie Hogue and Paul Heroux presented the Voting Matters slide show. Walker Smith and Suzanne Pena participated in a panel on education and immigration concerns. Other League members present were Toni Crabtree and Virginia Meany.

Voter Services and Gun Violence Prevention tabled side by side at Orange County's Back to School Fair D-6 at Carver Middle School. In addition to school supplies, this well attended annual event provided families community resources, entertainment, lunch, and raffle drawings. VS members Marsha Davis, Saudi Ellis, Karen Picciano performed voter outreach while GVP Chair Linda Coffin and Be Smart volunteers provided gun locks and safety information to families. Joining League members for a photo op was OC D-6 Commissioner Mike Scott.
