The League of Women Voters of Orange County has a history of more than 80 years in this community as an activist, grassroots organization whose members believe citizens should play a critical role in advocacy.  We do not endorse or oppose political candidates or parties at any level of government.  Our advocacy positions are based on the merits of each issue, after careful study and consensus.

LWVOC and Education Committee member, Stephanie Vanos, recently spoke at the OCPS Board Meeting:

"On behalf of the League of Women Voters of Orange County, I would like to say thank you for your efforts, as a school board and school district, to support our students and schools against the ever-growing efforts by the Governor and state legislature to diminish your control over our local schools."

The Education Committee is hosting the upcoming webinar highlighted below. Save the date for attendance next week.

WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN AND WHY is public education in Florida continuing to suffer with lack of funds, lack of support and hostilities mounting from so many directions? Look no further than our Florida State Legislators who have consistently redirected taxpayer dollars and consistently maligned public education.

The LWVOC is busy with informative community events answering voter questions; last week they were at The Plymouth Apts in Winter Park.  This has been a core mission of the League since its founding.  Shown above l. to r.:  Tarena Grant (Resource Coordinator-WP Housing Authority,) Carol Foglesong, Lee Rambeau Kemp, Mary Lou Basham

Letter to the Editor
Co-Presidents Sue Gilman and Barbara Lanning recently submitted to the editor of the Orlando Sentinel:  15-week abortion ban is unfair, unsafe
"Everyone deserves the freedom to make their own decisions about their bodies, lives, and healthcare; it is a human right. The state of Florida should protect our freedoms, not place restrictions on them. Two bills currently being fast-tracked through the Florida Legislature, Senate Bill 146 and House Bill 5, would do just that (”Florida poised to ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy,” Feb. 18)."

This week's webinar will feature an informational session on proposed legislation that would drastically change voting and elections in Florida.
If passed, Senate Bill 524 & House Bill 7061 (dubbed as the Anti-Voter Freedom Act) would be harmful to both Florida's electorate and our organization's work.
Join us this Friday, February 25 at 1:00 p.m. (ET) as we welcome Brad Ashwell of All Voting Is Local to discuss SB 524 & HB 7061 in-depth.
  • Discussion: What exactly is in SB 524 & HB 7061? What would the effects be on voters? What would the effects be on 3PVROs like the League?
  • Action Items: What are the best steps to defeat or modify this bill?
  • Q&A Session with Brad Ashwell and Florida League President Cecile Scoon.
