The LWVOC tackled another important Florida issue in its Wednesday Hot Topics, “Preemption: The Death of Home Rule?”  As part of the 1968 Florida constitutional revision, Home Rule was approved by voters and adopted a few years later by the legislature. The Florida Constitution states in Article VIII, Section 2(b) for municipalities: “Municipalities shall have governmental, corporate and proprietary powers to enable them to conduct municipal government, perform municipal functions and render municipal services -- and may exercise power for municipal purposes except as otherwise provided by law.” Continue reading HERE

The School to Prison Pipeline: The intersection between the lack of mental health services and criminalizing our children

Learn more about League history, advocacy and leadership opportunities and hear from our guest speaker, former Co-President Gloria Pickar.

Last week, we extended our condolences upon the loss of League member Alexander Beasley (shown left with Judy Tracy registering voters.)  His legacy was poignantly shared last month in the Orlando Sentinel:

His former editor John Huff shared that it was "hard to know which Alex to celebrate and miss the most ... the determined journalist, the hard-as-nails rooftop basketball mate, the relentless physical specimen, the loyal friend, the dedicated humanist, the loving companion to Lynn, the kind and decent man he never failed to be. Alex made a real difference in this world in both his profession and in the way he lived."

And if so moved, consider honoring Alex by attending this weekend's rally for his beloved newspaper, detailed below.

We often link to Orlando Sentinel articles and op-ed pieces (many written by Leaguers) knowing that "defending democracy" requires reaching the people; the local newspaper has traditionally been the core of that outreach, therefore, we're sharing this invitation.

From the Sentinel Guild:

We wanted to reach out to ask for your support as we, the journalists at the Orlando Sentinel, come together this Saturday with community members and stakeholders to save local news.

Our communities are at risk of losing their newspapers, which keep the public informed and hold the powerful accountable. We don't want this future for Orlando.

Please join us at Lake Eola on Saturday at 10 a.m. to demand Tribune shareholders reject Alden’s bid and choose smart, civic-minded leadership for the future of journalism in Central Florida. We will be in the northeast grassy area on the corner of Robinson Street and Eola Drive.

Much appreciation to the Orlando Philharmonic for the VIP invitation to members--Karen Estrin, Barbara Granade, & Barbara Lanning upon the world premiere of "America, Come."  Nationwide performances will continue through the summer.
The pieces used inspiration from the lives, letters, and speeches of Carrie Chapman Catt and Woodrow Wilson to explore women's suffrage and the passing of the 19th Amendment.

Perhaps you've tuned in recently to events geared toward stopping the hate against AAPI.   LWV statement

"The League stands in solidarity with AAPI communities. We are committed to listening to and amplifying AAPI voices and educating ourselves on the historic and ongoing systemic racism that plagues this country so that we can be better allies.

“We urge our followers to do the same, and to call on elected and appointed officials at all levels of government to demonstrate their commitment to keeping ALL communities safe. There can be no liberty in the face of racist and xenophobic violence.”

Enjoy celebrating the community's heritage in May as well as standing against hate against AAPI.
From NEWS 6--

"Traces of Central Florida’s great and diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander population can be found everywhere—in our restaurants, businesses, college campuses and government offices.

From U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy, the first Vietnamese American elected to Congress, to JEFRË, a Filipino American artist crafting award-winning pieces in Orlando, to Johnny Nguyen, a Kennedy Space Center lunar station engineer born to Vietnamese refugees, there is no shortage of Asian American and Pacific Islander stories our community can tell."Continue reading HERE
