| It's Women's History Month and the LWVOC has many women led events we'd like to highlight including our own Hot Topics next week! These environmental experts are at the forefront of one of Florida's most pressing issues.
Join author and WLRN journalist, Amy Green on March 10th for a conversation to coincide with the publication of her new book, Moving Water The Everglades and Big Sugar. She will be interviewed by Gabbie Milch, former Co-Chair of the Natural Resources committee. Described as an "engrossing expose" and "political storytelling at its best" the conversation is sure to enlighten about Florida's unique environmental treasure.

MARCH is Women's History Month: Join us on March 18, noon via Zoom
Show your support for defending democracy and the importance of telling women’s stories at this second annual Women’s History Month celebration, presented by the Orange County Regional History Center and LWVOC.
This year’s honoree, Mabel Norris Reese, fought for justice and civil rights in Lake County at the helm of the Mount Dora Topic, as she investigated the case of the Groveland Four and the instances of grave injustice. Speakers include our own (shown below l. to r.) Jackie Brockington and Co-President Gloria Pickar.
| | | | Adrienne Katz Katz has been sharing the story of the League and taking pride in women's accomplishments for many years. Here she offers her own take on why all of us should pay closer attention to women's history: "Every woman today who has in her own name a job, a bank account, a credit card, a lease, a car, a mortgage, a diploma or a pension has these because she is standing on the shoulders of millions of women before her who fought for the right to vote. Our grandmothers didn’t have these rights—the generations of women since the 1920s have continued to open doors, break glass ceilings and raise children who now take these rights for granted!"

One of the important functions of the LWVOC is sending observers (mostly virtual now) to monitor local governments around Orange County and report on what they are doing. In celebration of Women’s History month, join Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and the City of Orlando for Woman in Motion Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek and the Remaking of NASA at the Dr. Phillips Center’s Frontyard Festival.
This free even tis a first come, first seated event. When you arrive, you will be assigned to your own socially distant box for up to 5 people.
Watch the inspiring true story of how Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols pioneered the NASA recruiting program to hire people of color and the space agency’s first female astronauts in the late 1970s and ’80s.
The actress transformed her sci-fi TV stardom into a real-life science career when, in 1977, she started a campaign to bring diversity to NASA—creating the company Women In Motion, Inc. and recruiting more than 8,000 African American, Asian and Latino women and men.
Nichelle was credited by NASA for turning it into one of the most diverse independent agencies in the United States Federal Government. She and her program continue to influence a younger generation of astronauts, too—including Mae Jemison, the first female African American astronaut in space.
Along with Nichelle Nichols, Woman In Motion features celebrities, activists, scientists and astronauts including Neil deGrasse Tyson, George Takei, Pharrell Williams, Martin Luther King III, Al Sharpton, Vivica A. Fox, Walter Koenig and more.
