 |  | | Today marks day 49 of 2021...yes, it's going by quickly! We know with the upheaval of post holidays, post election conflict (has it been crazy in our Capitol or what?) that renewal notices slide around our desktops and email archives.
The time though is NOW to RENEW your membership. Yes, our in-person meetings/events are limited (almost non-existent) BUT like so many organizations, we're operating fully via our virtual connections.
Perhaps you're wondering why membership is important in non-election years? Seasoned veterans will tell you that the hard work is in the off years and it's so true. Unfortunately, this is when so many of our rights come under attack as the recent LWVFL Capitol Report highlighted:
Your local dues are divided to support LWVOC, LWVFL, and LWVUS and as news outlets will tell you, a lot is happening that could adversely affect our democracy. We need your support via membership to empower voters and help to create a more perfect democracy.

Join us for a celebration of Black cultural contributions to poetry, music and dance, art, and more from the 18th through the 20th centuries. The program will include both known and little-known artists, carefully arranged to move through time in what previous seminar attendees have called “a cacophony of celebrating Black artistry” in which harmonious themes will be revealed.

The Government Committee was asked for the third time to moderate a Winter Park Candidate Forum. The Winter Park Library specifically asked the Government Committee to moderate its forum for the two mayoral candidates. We have agreed to do so. Entire event will be virtual. Carol Foglesong will be the moderator, assisted by Caroline Emmons-Schram for question clarification, and with Jan Little as timer. The event will take place Friday, 2/26, from 11am – 12 noon. Questions for the candidates may be submitted to events@wppl.org. Watch on www.facebook.com/WinterParkPublicLIbrary. Forum is to be recorded and should be available for viewing after the actual event via the Library’s FB page.

Show your support for defending democracy and the importance of telling women’s stories at this second annual Women’s History Month celebration, presented by the Orange County Regional History Center and LWVOC.
This year’s honoree, Mabel Norris Reese, fought for justice and civil rights in Lake County at the helm of the Mount Dora Topic, as she investigated the case of the Groveland Four and the instances of grave injustice. Speakers include our own Jackie Brockington and Co-President Gloria Pickar.

She will be interviewed by Gabbie Milch, former Co-Chair of the Natural Resources committee. In the course of this discussion, we’ll aim to dissect some of the most urgent issues affecting the Black community, from the COVID-19 pandemic, to social justice, to jobs and housing, and more.
