| | | The Orange County Regional History Center announces a landmark exhibition Yesterday, This Was Home: The Ocoee Massacre 1920 that examines the largest incident of voting-day violence in United States history. The exhibition marks the centennial of the event---once hidden history in Central Florida--and will be on display from Oct. 3, 2020 through Feb. 14, 2021.
The Ocoee Massacre was ignited on Election Day of 1920, when Moses Norman, a Black citizen, attempted to vote in Ocoee and was turned away. Join us for our special exhibition-opening event, highlighting the importance of voting and civic engagement to American democracy. In addition to exploring our new landmark exhibition, Yesterday, This Was Home: The Ocoee Massacre of 1920, we invite guests to consider ways that they can too can raise their voices for the causes that matter to them. In partnership with the League of Women Voters of Orange County, we’ll offer information and resources for new and future voters, including opportunities to register to vote. This is a free event. Social distancing protocols will be observed and masks are required. For safety purposes, capacity will be limited in our exhibit hall. Pre-registration is required. For those of you doing November ballot research, the Hot Topics team is delighted to showcase LWVOC subject matter experts on October 14th explaining the review process and pros and cons of the respective proposed amendments to the Orange County Charter.
Our panelists will include Charter Review Commission members and those with specific knowledge of the underlying issues. Our Co-President, Gloria Pickar, will serve as moderator and she will guide discussion with panelists including Kay Hudson, Angela Melvin and Carol Fogelsong.

After intense study of the issues and merits of the proposals, the League of Women Voters Orange County strongly endorses and recommends voting YES on the 3 Orange County Charter questions on the November 3rd ballot.

Distinguished author Martha S. Jones will be the keynote speaker at the 2020 Jerrell Shofner Lecture Series on Florida History and Culture. This year’s lecture will take place virtually on Monday, October 12 from 6pm-7:30pm and focuses on “The Right to Vote: Women and Race in the 1920 Election.“
Jones is a professor of history and the Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor at Johns Hopkins University, A legal and cultural historian whose work examines how Black Americans have shaped the story of American democracy, Jones’s latest book, Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Fought for Rights for All, was released this year. The book explores the epic history of African American women’s pursuit of political power and how it transformed America.

Inspired by the role of voting in the Ocoee Massacre, the virtual sessions describe the history of voter suppression in central Florida as it relates to gender and race.
