Rally to save local journalism/Orlando Sentinel

Published on 5/13/2021

We wanted to reach out to ask for your support as we, the journalists at the Orlando Sentinel, come together this Saturday with community members and stakeholders to save local news.

The Sentinel Guild and other unions under our newspapers’ parent company, Tribune Publishing, are holding nationwide rallies on May 15 in support of a better investment in strong, local journalism.

The rallies come in the final days before Tribune shareholders are scheduled to vote May 21 on Alden Global Capital’s bid for Tribune newspapers. Alden is a hedge fund known for destroying newspapers. It guts newsrooms and shrinks staff to maximize its profits.

Our communities are at risk of losing their newspapers, which keep the public informed and hold the powerful accountable. We don't want this future for Orlando.

Please join us at Lake Eola on Saturday at 10 a.m. to demand Tribune shareholders reject Alden’s bid and choose smart, civic-minded leadership for the future of journalism in Central Florida. We will be in the northeast grassy area on the corner of Robinson Street and Eola Drive.

We would appreciate your support on May 15. If possible, we would also love for you to speak about why the mission and stability of the Orlando Sentinel is important to you, your community and our collective civic life. Either way, we would ask you to please sign onto the letter attached to show our local support for the Sentinel.

We look forward to seeing you Saturday! If you have questions, please reach out to Grace Toohey at 301-814-7494 or Monivette Cordeiro at 407-885-1162.

Thank you,

Sentinel Guild
