Transforming Plastic Waste to an Alternative Fuel Source

The League of Women Voters of Orange County Natural Resources Committee is working with the City of Winter Park, the City of Orlando, and Orange County to repurpose election signs generated this campaign season.

Winter Park Commissioner Marty Sullivan expresses enthusiasm about having found a solution to the massive waste of plastic and the space all these signs take up in the landfill. “We’ve looked for a way to responsibly dispose of all this plastic for many years,” said Sullivan. The city’s Sustainability Program moved quickly to get the project set up and ready for election sign collection.

Residents, candidates, political parties and campaigns are encouraged to gather plastic signs from roadsides, polling sites, and their front yards between November 4 and November 22. Collection crates are set up and ready to receive signs in three Winter Park locations and 2 Orlando locations.

1. Cady Way Trail by the pool at 2525 Cady Way

2. The Community Garden at Mead Botanical Garden at 1300 South Denning Drive

3. Winter Park Fire-Rescue Station 64 at 1439 Howell Branch Road
4. First Unitarian Church of Orlando 1901 E. Robinson Street Orlando
5. Broadway United Methodist Church 406 E. Amelia Street Orlando

With guidance from Eco Strategies Group of Orlando, a mountain of plastic signs will be saved from the landfill and transported by the City of Orlando on November 23 to NuCycle Energy in Plant City where they will be transformed from bulky plastic sheets to NuCycle's Enviro Fuelcubes. 100% of the Enviro Fuelcubes currently being manufactured by NuCycle are used by a large cement manufacturer to generate electricity, replacing coal as a much cleaner energy source!  They want all the election signs they can get so bring them on!
