How can you make a difference as Orange County Sheriff?

  • Reduce Violent Crime - Target violent offenders, drug dealers and illegal guns with aggressive enforcement.
  • Put More Deputies on the Streets - Redeploy deputies to patrol in uniform.
  • Better Fiscal Management - Look for opportunities to save taxpayer dollars.
  • Improve Technology - Employ the latest technology to better monitor, detect and respond to crime.
  • Redefine agency response to traffic issues to make roadways safer.
  • Better Compensate Employees - Work with legislative bodies to improve compensation for employees forced to retire as the result of duty related injuries.
  • Partner to Decrease Juvenile Violent Crime - Engage all segments of the community in developing strategies to combat juvenile and gang crime.
  • Lead in Emergency Preparedness - Plan regional responses to terrorist incidents or natural disasters.
  • Impanel Transition Team - Appoint a volunteer group of citizens to make recommendations to improve the delivery of services

What are the top three challenges facing the Sheriff's Office?

  • Reducing crime during a poor economy and era of tax reform. Crime is a bi-product of social problems and crime reduction will require fiscal leadership from not only the Sheriff, but other elected officials and community leaders.
  • There is a pervasive perception within the agency and the community that there is a lack of organizational accountability. Supervisors and managers are not holding employees accountable for performing well. As Sheriff, I will lead by example and select people for promotion or leadership who have demonstrated an ability to hold others accountable and still get the job done. Quality training and mentoring are vital to professional development.
  • The third challenge centers around recruitment. The Sheriff's Office, like any public organization competes with the private sector to attract qualified candidates for hire, especially minority candidates. In order to attract the best, compensation, image and opportunities for advancement are critical.

How will you work with other agencies to ensure a safer Orange County?
My pledge to the citizens of Orange County is to continue being an active and visible leader who will work daily to keep our citizens safe. Both staff and I will participate in mutual federal, state and local law enforcement meetings to share information on emerging crime trends, etc. I will look to using current technology to ensure the sharing of information between law enforcement agencies. In addition, we will work in partnership with various crime task forces and emergency management organizations in disaster preparedness and training. I will enter into mutual aid agreements with surrounding counties, municipalities and state agencies to ensure adequate local and regional responses to emergencies are planned and exercised on a regular basis. Lastly, I will personally continue to instruct advanced courses at the Criminal Justice Institute on crisis management.
