MEMBER HIGHLIGHT Our membership runs the gamut of age, race, and sex and we want to highlight as many of you as possible. With the last year limiting our social/business gatherings, it's even more important that all of us get to know each other. Click to fill out the Member Highlight form.
This week, there were no new entries in our highlight form (hint: click above) But if you're looking for inspiration, let us direct you to exciting news about Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and Mabel Norris Reese honorees of the 2020 and 2021 Women’s History Month celebrations that LWVOC co-sponsored with the History Center; they are the subjects of history-making sculptures that are cause for even more celebration.
A bronze bust of Reese was unveiled recently at Mount Dora’s Sunset Park on Sept 24 (bottom right-League members were among the crowd celebrating the unveiling) and the marble statue of Bethune that’s bound for National Statuary Hall in Washington is slated to make a stop at the News-Journal Center in Daytona Beach from October 12 to December 12.
Hours for viewing the statue in Daytona Beach (bottom left-photo courtesy Daytona Beach News-Journal), with social distancing in place, are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free online reservations should be available October 8 or soon thereafter at MMBStatue.org.
The website also has details about the monumental work, which stands 11 feet high. When the statue travels on to Washington, D.C., Bethune will be the first African American woman honored by a state with a place in Statuary Hall in the nation’s Capitol.
The News-Journal Center is at 221 N Beach St in Daytona Beach. For more on the bust of Mabel Norris Reese, visit RememberMabel.com.
