VOLUNTEER LEGAL HELP NEEDED FOR JUNE 15 & 29

Calling all LWVOC members who are attorneys and friends or family of local attorneys:

Amendment 4 to restore voting rights of former felons passed last November by 64.5%, but the 2019 Florida Legislature just passed SB 7066 that restricts this right by requiring payment of all fines, fees, and restitution obligations (civil judgement) before these returning citizens can vote. Governor DeSantis has indicated he will sign this bill into law.

Most of these people don’t understand this new law, whether they have a civil judgement, nor how to meet this new obligation, confining them to lifetime disenfranchisement.

The League of Women Voters of Florida is convening with area partners to train volunteer attorneys to help returning citizens who need legal assistance to determine if they have civil judgments and how to proceed. The first meeting is June 15 in Orlando and attorneys will receive 2 hours of CLE credit. Another event is planned for June 29.
