ACTION GROUPS AND COMMITTEES*

 

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

  • Inform our membership and community about League work and events via newspapers, magazines, e-mail, Facebook, Twitter and other social networks including Central Florida Spotlight and our website, www.lwvoc.org.
  • Write and edit our League newsletter.

Study issues and take action by lobbying legislators and school boards

  • Participate in speaking activities to inform the public of League positions on education issues.
  • Learn differences in schools and how they are funded: public, private, vouchers, etc.

 

GOVERNMENT: Co-chairs Michele Levy michelerlevy@gmail.com and Sandra Powers saa.powers@gmail.com

  • Research best practices and advocate for government improvements.   
  • Join our Observer Corps and attend government meetings and report back to the membership.
  • Support advocacy efforts that include meeting with lawmakers, developing the League’s positions on issues ranging from election laws to finance and taxation.

  • Educate and advocate for gun safety and gun violence prevention
  • Work in support of comprehensive universal background checks for gun purchases
  • Advocate against unsafe gun legislation and seek to ban assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines

     

    HEALTHCARE: Chair: New chair(s) needed.

  • Focus on bringing healthcare to all Floridian, including those who work but cannot afford insurance
  • Work to address factors influencing the stability of our health care services

  • Study immigration issues and be prepared to support LWV’s recommendations.
  • Improve outcomes for at-risk youth by supporting and influencing best practice policies through education and advocacy
  • Promote use of Civil Citations instead of arrest when appropriate
  • Decrease use of Direct File of juveniles into the adult criminal justice system
  • Improve conditions for juveniles at our local Juvenile Detention Center

  • A group of dedicated League members who focus on education to our membership and the community about the goals, history and importance of the League in forming and affecting policy for Central Florida.

    • Educate members about League history and values and focus on League growth and retention
    • Report statistics to state and national League of Women Voters; maintain membership database
    • Plan special events that include new member orientations and annual meetings.

  • Study environmental issues and take action by lobbying state legislators, as well as local county and city officials.
  • Be part of organizing events that focus on the need to preserve Florida’s imperiled waters.

     

    SPEAKERS BUREAU:  Chair: Barbara Granade barbaradgranade@gmail.com

  • Learn the history of the League and be able to present this information to the community.
  • Study important political issues and share with local organizations after receiving Speakers Bureau training.

     

    TRANSPORTATION: Co-chairs: Theo Webster  twebster49@gmail.com Deirdre Macnab floridaleague@earthlink.net

  • Study issues that affect all Central Florida residents ranging from new construction on I-4 to

    SunRail to the Orlando International Airport.

  • Learn about better city planning, pedestrian safety, roadways and funding for regional transportation. Work to encourage laws that provide for travel safety in Central Florida.

     

    VOTER SERVICES:  Chair:  Maria Padilla maria_padilla@bellsouth.net

    • Create our online Voter Guide to aid the electorate in making informed decisions.
    • Register voters, explain ballot amendments and organize Candidate Forums.  Help with candidate forum invitations and preparing questions for the candidates.
    • Participate in Adopt-a Precinct, your Orange County League effort to manage and staff a designated polling location on election days.

HOT TOPICS LUNCHEON PROGRAMS/OTHER EVENTS

 

Hot Topics luncheons take place the second Wednesday of each month, and keep you informed about local issues that make a difference in your county and state. Hear interesting speakers; meet other members; enjoy a delicious lunch; learn about opportunities to be active in your League.

Luncheons begin at 11:30 a.m., and cost $25.00 for paid members and $35.00 for non-members.

Luncheons are held at Sorosis House, 501 East Livingston St., Orlando, FL, 32803.
