The 2018 Legislative Session

Guns and School Safety     THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT




Legislators and other experts will sum up the session, examine key issues such as gun safety, the budget and the impact of the Parkland shootings.

  
PANELISTS


JC Martinez, a junior at Apopka High School who helped organize his schools’ March 14 walkout and spoke on school safety and gun control, will be among the Hot Topic speakers.

“I’m very passionate about this issue because it transcends partisan labels,” he says, adding that not addressing school safety “would be a disservice to humanity.”




State Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith was elected to the Legislature in 2016 and represents Florida House District 49.
Previously, he worked as a legislative aide to former Democratic Representatives Joe Saunders and Scott Randolph.

 

State Senator David Simmons is a Republican member of the Senate representing District 9 since 2010. 
He has served in the Legislature since 2000.
During the last session he pushed for higher standards for private schools that take nearly $1 billion in state scholarships.




First Vice President League of Women Voters of Florida, Patti Brigham formed the League's statewide Gun Safety Committee, which she chairs.
She has been an ardent campaigner for gun safety and a state leader who connects like minded groups seeking sensible firearm legislation.
