How many years have you been practicing law?
I have been practicing in Orlando for sixteen (16) years. I began working for Joe DuRocher at the Public Defender's Office in March 1992. I started my own law office in December 1997. I received an AV rating (top rated) from Martindale Hubbell in 2004. My entire practice has involved litigation in both criminal and civil cases. I currently represent small businesses sued in U.S. Federal Court under the American's with Disabilities Act. (ADA) I am able to bring these businesses into compliance with Federal Law while minimizing unnecessary litigation and attorney's fees. After ten (10) years of private practice I have developed the ability to manage a case load as well as the demands of running a business. I devote part of my practice to representing individuals who cannot afford an attorney. I have appeared in Courtrooms, both State and Federal, from Key West to Jacksonville.

Which aspect of your legal experience is most relevant to the position you are seeking?
My expertise is trial work. After sixteen (16) years of litigation I understand the role of a judge and the importance of respect and demeanor in a Court of law. My varied experience reinforces the idea that our judges should be impartial and detached in applying the law to a particular case. Courtrooms belong to the citizens, not the lawyers or judges. It's important that a judge articulates the reason for a ruling so that litigants understand the reasoning behind the result. Although a litigant may not like the result, understanding the reason and knowing that the judge allowed both sides to be heard equally and fairly allows an individual to move forward knowing that they had their day in Court. I will be a judge who allows lawyers and litigants to present their case fairly and equally.

What management skills will allow you to handle increased case loads?
Managing my own practice has taught me all of the skills necessary to handle a court docket. With the budget cuts we have faced, it's important that justice not be ignored in return for efficiency. Case management is a skill I developed as a Public Defender and have continued to refine as a Private Attorney. These are the same skills that a judge needs to manage the courts docket efficiently. The key is recognizing cases that can be easily resolved and taking the initiative to do so. It is important to separate these cases from those that need to be litigated. In doing so a judge is better able to apply our limited resources to cases where there is a genuine question of law or fact that must be adjudicated by the judge or jury.
