League of Women Voters of Orange County OPPOSES Proposal to Expand
Orange County's School Board to include an elected chair elected districtwide
The League of Women Voters of Orange County opposes this proposed
reorganization of the School Board. Empowering a single member with
two votes is contrary to the League's support of the basic democratic
principle of equal citizen representation in government entities. Also,
the League holds positions supporting professionalism in school administration
with the goal of improved student performance. There is no evidence
that this governance model advances this, and may reduce accountability
by creating confusion between the responsibility and authority of the
elected School Board Chair and the
School District Superintendent.
