SHATTERING RACIAL WALLS

By reliving and remembering history, we create awareness of the struggles and challenges that African Americans overcame in this country. This proven perseverance will serve as inspiration for the diverse community of Orange County, FL and the rest of America.

February has become a time designated for reflection, open dialogue, interdisciplinary education, and shared advocacy initiatives. Every race is connected to the rich history of this nation, and by celebrating Black History Month everyone can be included in a tradition of acknowledgement, inclusion and community engagement.  (Regina Edmonson)

At the Feb. 8 Hot Topics lunch, in honor of Black History Month, our accomplished speakers will share their stories about the obstacles African-Americans faced in a stubbornly segregated America in the 20th century.

Retired Florida Supreme Court Judge James Perry, the 85th Justice of the Florida Supreme Court (2009-2016), had marched with Martin Luther King and then earned a law degree, only to run into a group, the Georgia Board of Bar Examiners, that flunked him and 49 other African-American applicants. Perry and others sued and won.

Geraldine Thompson      Dr. Lavon Bracy

Former State Sen. Geraldine Thompson and Dr. Lavon Bracy helped integrate the University of Miami and then both went on to stellar careers in Florida – Thompson as a member of the Florida Legislature from 2006 to 2016 and Bracy as a co-founder (with her husband Randolph) of the New Covenant Baptist Church in Orlando.

Mable Butler, our fourth panelist, has had two major distinctions: She was the first female African-American on the Orlando City Commission and the first African-American on the Orange County Commission.

Our Black History Month program sold out last year; get your tickets soon to this popular event.
