League of Women Voters opposes tax proposal
The League of Women Voters of Florida
says the proposed property tax cut plan on the Jan. 29 ballot
exacerbates current inequities and will lead to less services
for the public and infrastructure improvements. (news release
here.)
Allowing homesteaders to keep the Save Our Homes tax limitation
runs contrary to the principle that people should pay what they
can afford, said president Dianne Wheatley-Giliotti. "Save
Our Homes is not based on ability to pay and has introduced a
bias against more recent home buyers and non-homestead property
owners resulting in large inequities in the taxes they pay."
The opposition is bad news for Gov. Charlie Crist, who is leading
the campaign to pass the amendment, which would double the homestead
exemption, allow for Save Our Homes portability and cap non-homestead
assessments at 10 percent annually.
